The U3A in New Zealand.

The U3A is an international movement whose aims are to provide education and stimulation to those of retirement age – the third age.

The original concept was developed in France as an extramural university activity.

The concept was significantly modified in the UK where it was recognised that most people of retirement age have something to contribute with the emphasis on sharing knowledge, without formal educational links.

In New Zealand we have followed the UK model; offering to share knowledge and experiences without the need for formal educational qualifications.

We join with others to broaden our minds, improve our knowledge, and enjoy one another’s company.  There are no membership requirements and no compulsory activities. Costs are kept to an absolute minimum and our events are held during the daytime.

We are united in our aims by a set of Guiding Principles.
